What is a Rhinoplasty?

When we think about cosmetic surgery, we sometimes conclude that the goal is to create ‘perfect’ features. When it comes to rhinoplasty, however, this can be a deceptive premise. Centrally located on the face, the nose bridges the divide between the eyes and the smile, and as such, should not call attention to itself, but rather blend with the other features to create holistic and natural beauty.

This nuanced approach towards balance and integration is our team's specialty, requiring a concentrated focus on the client’s unique anatomy and idiosyncrasies. Dr. Liu and his team are passionate about creating seamless, organic outcomes that maximize each patient’s innate attractiveness while working to eradicate cosmetic and structural nasal flaws.

Benefits of Nose Surgery

Not only can rhinoplasty improve facial aesthetics and structural impairments, it can also greatly enhance self-esteem in clients who have suffered from a poor self-image due to a prominent or poorly shaped nose. Our culture today is largely dependent on visual media, and although it may be frustrating, being photogenic is prized almost as much as one’s skill or education. Rhinoplasty can’t solve all your problems, but it can help you to look and feel your best in both social and professional settings.

Who is a Candidate for Nose Reshaping?

Anyone dissatisfied with the size, shape or contour of their nose is a candidate for nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty.

While a popular cosmetic procedure, nose reshaping can also correct structural abnormalities like a deviated septum, which can lead to breathing problems, chronic stuffiness, post-nasal drip and even snoring.

The best candidates for nasal surgery are old enough that their nose has finished growing – typically ages 15-17. There is no upper age limit for our San Francisco rhinoplasty. Clients should be in good health, both mentally and physically, with no major medical issues, and should have realistic expectations for improvement based on their consultation with one of our top surgeons.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

While the goal of Caucasian rhinoplasty often revolves around making a large nose smaller, ethnic rhinoplasty may require a host of alternative objectives, such as creating a more prominent bridge through bone or cartilage grafting, or narrowing a wide or bulbous tip. With a consummate background in reconstructive facial surgery, Dr. Liu and his team have mastered a vast range of advanced techniques, making them trusted leaders in San Mateo ethnic rhinoplasty. Rather than promote a generic, Westernized look, our team is careful to customize each cosmetic procedure to the patient’s wishes, working to preserve and honor cultural identity while simultaneously improving the overall appearance.

Revision Rhinoplasty

In cases where a previous nasal surgery has not achieved its intended results, due to outmoded surgical techniques, doctor error or a change in the patient’s aesthetic sensibilities, a revision rhinoplasty may be the logical next step. This type of surgery calls for immense precision, artistry and skill, as the doctor must masterfully navigate scar tissue and previous structural adjustments. With his formidable training and experience in reconstructive cosmetic surgery, Dr. Liu and his team are a natural choice for those wanting to receive one of the best procedures of revision rhinoplasty San Francisco and San Mateo have to offer.

How is it Done?

Nose reshaping is one of the most functionally and conceptually complex procedures when compared to other surgeries of the face and body. The sculpting of the nose must be highly individualized to complement your other facial features. Specifics of this procedure vary greatly depending upon patient needs. Bumps can be eliminated, nostril shape may be changed, and the bridge can be lowered or raised. The tip of the nose can be turned up or down and reduced or enlarged. Sometimes it is necessary to graft a bone or cartilage to the nasal structure. Depending upon your situation the procedure will be either "open" or "closed." In an open rhinoplasty a small incision is made in the tissue between the nostrils. In a closed rhinoplasty the procedure is totally internal.

The procedure typically takes two to three hours and is done on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia is used.

Recuperation

You may wake up with a splint, some packing in your nose and a drip pad for drainage. You can expect to be swollen, bruised and stuffed up. Your cheeks and jaw may be sore. Oral medications will keep you comfortable. With the exception of exercise, you can resume your normal routine in seven to ten days. Dressing and packing are removed after three to seven days. The splint is removed after one week. In two to four weeks much of the swelling has improved and the nose continues to progress toward its ultimate shape in 12 to 18 months.

9 Tips for Your Rhinoplasty Recovery

  • Follow post-operative instructions: Adhere to the specific guidelines provided by your surgeon, including medication schedules, wound care, and activity restrictions.
  • Take ample rest: Allow your body to heal by getting plenty of rest and avoiding strenuous activities for the recommended duration.
  • Apply a cold compress: Use cold or ice packs on your nose to reduce swelling and discomfort. Be sure to follow your surgeon's instructions on timing and duration.
  • Elevate your head: Sleep with your head elevated on pillows to help minimize swelling and promote better drainage.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to aid in the healing process and keep your body hydrated.
  • Avoid nasal trauma: Avoid activities that may accidentally bump or injure your nose. Protect it by wearing glasses carefully or avoiding contact sports.
  • Eat a nutritious diet: Consume a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support your body's healing and recovery.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol: Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol, as they can hinder healing and increase the risk of complications.
  • Attend follow-up appointments: Regularly visit your surgeon for scheduled check-ups to monitor your progress, address concerns, and make necessary adjustments.

It's important to note that these are general tips, and it's crucial to consult with your surgeon for personalized advice based on your specific case.

Other Options

Depending upon your facial proportions and profile, nose reshaping is sometimes paired with a chin implant. It may also be recommended you consider augmentation of your cheeks, jaw or lips for the best result. In order to further enhance the beautiful results, an iGuide neck lift in San Jose / San Francisco might be recommended.

Other common skin concerns like fine lines or wrinkles can be treated with laser skin resurfacing. State-of-the-art computer imaging available at Bay Area Aesthetic Surgery will help you visualize your options.

I want a nose like Julia Roberts. Can you do that?

Years ago noses were fashion statements. A "Roman" nose, a "bobbed" nose. Today proportion is the key. To copy a celebrity nose may not be the right thing for you considering your other facial features. Your nose is the most prominent part of your profile and it should be highly individualized and in relation to your overall appearance.

Will you have to break my nose?

No, this is a myth. In nose surgery today, the smallest possible instruments are used to cut and shape structures of the nose including the bone. Bone re-molding will depend on your initial shape. It is often used when there is a substantial reduction required of the hump on the nose or to narrow a wide bridge.

Why did the last surgeon I consulted with want me to have more than just a "nose job?"

It is very common to consider other procedures along with nose surgery to achieve optimal facial harmony. Chin implants and cheek augmentation are the most popular options. Your surgeon may also demonstrate how procedures of the lower eyelid, neck lift or even ear set back could improve overall results. Remember, it is ultimately your decision as to the look you desire.

Do you use an open or closed technique?

Each technique has valuable aspects in nose reshaping. If the tip of the nose is the focus of the surgery, then open rhinoplasty is the preferred technique. On the other hand, if the dorsum of the nose is the focus, a closed approach is preferred. In our practice, we perform whichever procedure will give us the best result. It is important to have the knowledge and technical skill to be flexible in any approach to the nose, or for that matter, anywhere on the body.

My friend looked awful after her surgery. Can you help me heal better?

Anytime there is trauma to the nose, you will experience bruising and swelling around the immediate area. Some patients are more resistant than others. Your friend probably looked worse than she felt, but in any case there are herbal supplements such as arnica that can indeed help. It is also important to sleep upright for the first week and use cold compresses to reduce the swelling. More or less swelling and bruising is no indication of the overall success of the surgery or surgical skill.

Our team has helped numerous San Francisco rhinoplasty patients. We have also helped numerous breast augmentation San Francisco, San Jose and San Mateo patients. In addition, our team of surgeons are frequently sought after by facelift and liposuction patients.
